Summer Camps for Recreational, Competitive and Goalkeepers!

We are pleased to announce our 2012 Summer Camp Series. We are going to have camps for all levels of players. 2012 will see the return of our Recreational Full Day camp, Mini-Camp (half day) and full-day Goalkeeper Camps. We are also pleased to announce additions to our camp programs.

For 2012 we are going to hold half-day Goalkeeper Camps and a Competitive Player Camp that is only for Competitive Players in the club.

More information on the camps will be posted shortly, but we can provide most of the info to you now.

Recreational Summer Camp (Full Day)

Location: Nelson Park
Cost: $150, includes: T-Shirt, Ball, and swimming.
Time: 9am-3pm (includes early drop-off after 8am, and late pick up by 4pm)
Dates: July 2-6, 16-20, Aug 6-10

11 Players Gain Scholarships in the United States

Eleven former Burlington Heat rep soccer players are preparing for an exciting new chapter of their lives when they venture south this fall.

All 11 — including six Burlington residents — have accepted sports scholarships at Division 1 U.S. universities. One of the 11, Renata Fast, will head south with her hockey skates, not soccer cleats, in tow.

Another one, Elysia Masters, wound up her rep soccer career playing in Oakville after two stints with the Heat.

Casey Downey has coached all of the girls (all born in 1994) including Erin Williams-Weir, Maddy Griep and Masters of Nelson High School, Angela Cutaia of Notre Dame, Fast of M.M. Robinson and Marissa Borschke of Corpus Christi. The five out-of-towners who played for the Heat include Kitchener’s Nicole Lyon and Maxine Murchie, Oakville’s Julia Lombardi and Kinley McNicoll and Terra Cotta’s Nicole Waters.

While having 10 players graduate the Burlington Youth Soccer Club program by gaining a U.S. scholarship is an impressive feat, Downey considers it part of the job.

“Any number less than 8-12 and I’d be disappointed,” said Downey. “At one time it was all about winning Ontario Cups. We still want to do that, but parents and the players are more excited to get a reward at the end of the day.”

That reward can be worth anywhere from $80,000 to $160,000 worth of schooling covering somewhere between 70-100 per cent of a player’s tuition costs over four years.

“And it’s not always a straight athletic scholarship,” said Downey. “It can be 50 per cent scholastic, for example. That’s not usually a problem for our girls, however.”

Whether it’s the tough economy or more competition for scholarships, the task for Canadian athletes to gain one of them is more difficult than ever, said Downey.

“The number of Canadians heading south is still high but you really have to work at it,” he said.

Skill development is always the No. 1 priority, but showcasing that talent is also a necessity.

Fast was exploring soccer scholarship offers but found the best fit — a good academic program relatively close to home — was offered by Clarkson and its women’s hockey team.

There are a variety of factors parents and students take into account when seeking a scholarship, said Downey.

Financial considerations, location, coaching staff, the school team’s level of play and availability of quality education in the field that interests the athlete are all considered, with varying degrees of importance.

Cutaia, for example, is a tremendous soccer talent, but took her time before committing to UTEP, the farthest destination any of the six Burlington girls will travel come fall.

Attaining a scholarship to a highly-ranked school offers prestige and top-notch coaching, but it may also be more difficult to excel.

“Some don’t want to be a small fish in a big pond,” said Downey. “A smaller school may give the player a chance to contribute more and maybe start in their first year.”

Unfortunately, not all athletic ventures to the U.S. have fairy tale endings.

“I’ve heard ridiculous stories (of the high percentage of athletes returning home early) like 50 per cent,” he said. “The (BYSC) Sting (graduating players), for example, had two players return out of 10. That’s 20 per cent, and overall it might be that high, maybe.”

The five out-of-town Heat players heading south will attend Kent State (Lyon), Eastern Michigan (Lombardi), Central Florida (Murchie), Dayton (Waters) and Wisconsin (McNicoll).

Returning BYSC Referee Clinics

The BYSC will be introducing Assistant Referees in the U15, U17 and U21 House League divisions. If you are interested in becoming an Assistant Referee for the 2012 Outdoor Season you MUST attend this clinic. Participation in the Assistant Referee Clinic may lead to possible reffing opportunities in rep games.

Participation in the Returning Referee Clinic is mandatory for those who are interested in taking the Assistant Referee Clinic.

Canada's Booth aims to shine bright in Friday's do-or-die matchup with Mexico

Before the Beijing Olympics, she was one of the final cuts. And before last summer's World Cup, a string of injuries scuttled her hopes.

So while no Canadian player will be lacking any motivation heading into Friday's do-or-die matchup with Mexico for a 2012 London Olympic berth, Melanie Booth might just be the picture of passion at B.C. Place.

"I try not to think about that stuff, but it's always in the back of my mind," said the 27-year-old defender from Burlington, Ont. "I just want to prove myself. I want to prove I belong on this team and out there on the field. It's always something I strive for."

School of Soccer FAQ

Below are some commonly asked questions regarding the School of Soccer

Times of sessions are below:

11am-12pm 6/7 year olds ('06 and '05)

12-1pm 8/9 year olds ('04 and '03)

1-2pm 10/11 year olds ('02 and '01)

2-3pm 12/13 year olds ('00 and '99)

3-4pm 14+ ('98+)

So please come to the hour that your child’s age group is. Thanks

What to wear?

Please wear your soccer playing gear. Shorts/socks/shinguards/shirt. They will be receiving t-shirts (but they aren’t in yet, so please have them come with a soccer shirt, doesn’t matter if it’s their old team’s uniform or any other shirt)

What to bring?

We have soccer balls at the dome, please DO NOT BRING A SOCCER BALL, as they will spend 30 minutes looking for it after practice (it will get mixed in with all the others and can take forever to find)

What shoes should they wear?

Wear your soccer shoes. It’s turf in the dome, so you can wear your outdoor shoes or indoor soccer shoes. If they only have running shoes they can wear those as well, but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

Where is it?

Dome 2 at Sherwood Forest park (when you’re looking at the domes from parking lot it’s the one on the right)

When to arrive?

15 minutes prior to your start time

Can you drop them off and leave?

Yes you can do that, go enjoy the 55 minutes you have off as a parent!

What else to bring?

Water, please bring plenty of it. Also please bring it a water bottle, not the little ones you buy a 24 pack of, but the sport bottles that they’ll take home.

Also the dome staff wants to remind everyone that there is no food in the Dome, so please don’t bring any cookies/donuts, apples/oranges, or I have to listen to the dome staff go on and on about it.

Police Check Night

POLICE CHECKS

The Club Police Check night will be held on Monday, April 16th, 2012 at the BYSC Office from 6-8pm. All applicable Club members who have not had this done within the past 3 years must attend. this service is free on this night and you must bring two pieces of ID. Please send this onto other staff that this applies to.

FYI... All competitive team officials, staff, board members, committee members and house league coaches (for teams U11 and up) must have a valid police check.

'96 Girls Win Two Prestigious Cups!

Burlington, ON - The Bayhawks impressive stable of teams continue to earn accolades all over Canada and the United States, with the '96 Girls taking both the CASL and Disney Showcase to close out the 2011 Fall/Winter. Head man Neil Schofield and Assistant John McKenna have done an exceptional job with this group of talented young ladies.

The 2nd Ranked Team in Ontario went down to Raleigh, North Carolina first for the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) Showcase Tournament going undefeated. In their first match they got the best of Arlington (West VA) Flames 3-nil, then Florida Soccer Alliance (FSA) 5-nil and finished off Huntsville FC (Alabama) 7-nil.

The second major accomplishment for '96's came at the close of 2011 at the Disney Showcase. It is an invitation only tournament for some of the highest rated clubs in North America and also Clubs from Europe and Asia. The girls went undefeated again, winning all four matches. They beat Yankee United (Connecticut) 2-nil, Massapequa Stars (New York) 4-2, Florida FC Premier (2-nil), and McLean MPS Fury (Virginia) 1-nil to capture the Gold Medal!

'99 Bayhawks Winners Advance in Ontario Indoor Cup

Buffalo, NY - The '99 Boys Bayhawks have picked up where they left off last season by winning the Pre-Season Indoor Tournament at Sahlen's Sports Park in the Buffalo, NY Suburbs. They posted 3 clean sheets in route to the tournament title, winning 2-nil, 4-nil, and drawing nil-nil.

Congrats to Coach Aleks and his charges for the fantastic work they've already accomplished this season.

The team has also won their group in the Ontario Indoor Cup and have their next round match on February 11th. This past summer the boys lost 1-nil in the Ontario Cup Semi-Finals and are looking to bring one of the first boy's titles to the club in the top tier in many years.

BYSC and Canada National Team Player Signs On With Wisconsin

BYSC's Kinley McNicoll has verbally committed to the University of Wisconsin for 2012.

Kinley has played 11 times for Canada's national u-17 team, including two starts at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Trinidad & Tobago last year. McNicoll also scored the only goal to lead Canada over the Mexican u17's to win the CONCACAF Regional Championship after stunning the United States in Costa Rica last year.

With BYSC she has played under Casey Downey over the past couple season.

The University of Wisconsin Badgers finished last season 11-4-5 overall, and 7-1-2 in the Big Ten Conference. They advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division 1 tournament as well.

Good luck Kinley and enjoy Madison, it's a fantastic town!
